We aim to develop children’s insight into the pleasure and power of music. Children are taught to listen to, and interpret music from different times, places and cultures. They are given opportunities to compose and perform their own music using a range of instruments and sounds. The school has its own music room and there are two large halls for public performances. Many of our classrooms are equipped with a piano and the school has a strong partnership with the Wycombe Music Centre, which uses our premises. We are particularly proud of our school choir which regularly participates in collaborative events such as the High Wycombe Music Festival and concerts and The Royal Albert Hall.
Sound Start is an innovative band project which all children in Year 5 participate in. It teaches the music curriculum by introducing children to brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. The project is further developed in Year 6.
Our introduction to music starts with class teachers in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. At Key stage 2 we introduce a degree of specialism in Years 3 and 4 with input from the Music Centre with class teaching and an African drumming project.
