Governors
Welcome to the Millbrook Combined School Governors page. The Governing Body of Millbrook is made up of different members of the community who play a very important role within our school.

All Governors are volunteers, and we offer our time, skills and experience to work with the Headteacher and staff to ensure that all children at Millbrook – from those who use the Children’s Centre right up to Year 6 – are supported to achieve their greatest potential, and to develop the skills and confidence they need to access their next stage of learning.

The Role of the Governing Body
The role of the governing body is key to the effectiveness of the school and operates at a strategic level. Its key functions are to:

  • Set the aims and objectives of the school
  • Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress that the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • Be a source of support and challenge to the head teacher. Sometimes known as a critical friend.

The Headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school in its day to day running.  The Head teacher is also responsible for the implementation of the school policies, curriculum and the strategic framework established by the governing body.

The Head teacher is accountable to the Governing Body. 

How the Governing Body Works
The governing body has overall responsibility for the aims and direction of the school, and is accountable to all stakeholders for the way the school is run. The Governing Body will take advice from the Headteacher before making decisions.

The governing body:

  • sets a vision for the school, and a medium/long term strategic plan which determines how this vision will be achieved
  • focuses on raising standards of achievement, establishing high expectations and promoting effective teaching and learning so that all our pupils reach their potential
  • regularly reviews the impact of the school’s policies to ensure they are working well to achieve key objectives
  • ensures systems are in place to check progress and targets are being achieved
  • ensures that resources are used to best effect to ensure financial sustainability

The Full Governing Body meets each term and, in addition, business is conducted through committees.  In 2016/17, we are trialling a new committee structure:

  • Student & Community
  • Resources
  • Outcomes & Accountability
  • Pay Review Committee

As well as meeting together regularly as a Governing Body, Governors like to come and visit the school and get involved in school life. We particularly enjoy attending events where we can celebrate the achievements of the children as well as sharing in significant moments in the life of the school.

We monitor the new initiatives which the headteacher and staff are developing and see the impact they have on children’s learning. Above all, we hope to support the staff of the school in creating a safe, happy and caring environment where our children can develop, flourish and achieve.

Message from the Chair of Governors

 

The Governors would like to thank all parents and carers, for their continued support and trust in our ever improving school. We strive to provide the best resources and environment for all users of the facilities within the school and its buildings and with that support we can continue to develop and improve.

We are very lucky to have an engaged and pro-active Parents’ Council, and an equally active School Council.  Over the past year we have made good progress to ensure that the Governing Body works more closely with these two bodies so that we can incorporate their views and feedback into our strategic planning. This will continue to be an important focus in 2016/17.  And, of course, the excellent work of the Friends of Millbrook ensures that our children benefit from additional resources which cannot be funded through the School budget.

We would also like to say thank you to ALL our staff for their hard work and input into supporting the pupils in any way they can. It is their continued dedication that makes our school a welcoming and happy learning environment for the children. In our continuing goal to provide an outstanding environment for learning, it is their dedication and support that leads the way. We would also like to welcome the Children’s Centre into our family and particularly welcome all of the staff, support staff and ancillary services within that service, that now enable us to provide full support for our community’s parents and children from new born babies, through the nursery setting, and until they leave us for secondary school.

We have reincorporated many functions back for the community including the swimming pool, which through the hard work, particularly of Mr Tofte is now a valuable community resource. Mr Tofte’s work has allowed us to bring back an asset into the local community and make it available for all to use as was intended when it was built by parents for this community in the 1970s.

Finally, we would like to thank Miss Mansfield for her continued development of the school.  We have gone through a lot of challenges over the past year under the changing requirements of government, both local and national, and it is through her dedication that we as governors truly believe that the school can reach its outstanding goals and provide our vision of “Aiming for Excellence_Learning for Life” to all the children that pass through our doors.
